So when you're writing a book in your own little world (actually your world) you think you can invent everything, but you can't. Even in a book that is based on your experience you end up having to research all the details.
Ok, you COULD write a really shitty sci-fi or fantasy book not having researched any mythology or folklore any where and get the most useless piece of poo ever. You could. It would suck. And THAT good sirs is why you research.
Research makes a book believable and helps in the describing of a scene. It increases your ability to visualize because you've actually looked at all the minute details that could influence your characters. So while it sucks the big hairy one, it's still necessary. It's like a 5 year old with vegetables (or my husband if you're lucky enough to have married someone currently sporting the palate of a child). They don't want to eat them. They taste nasty. But they've got so much goodness in them if the kid doesn't eat his veggies, he is going to feel it.
Moral of the story, aspiring writers do your research! You'll write yourself a richer novel.
