Art is a Human Thing

There are three purposes to making any sort of art.

1. To make something beautiful. This can be relegated to decorative arts including marketing and pop art forms.
2. To express the depth and breadth of human experience. This is where emotional movements come into play and things like art therapy, a brilliant development in modern medicine.
3. To make political, social, or cultural commentary. This can be avant garde movements, or it can be pieces that represent any style or combination of styles as long as the subject matter pushing boundaries, questions the nature of a given subject, or otherwise confronts an issue.

All three of these are essential needs of humanity as a whole. We need beautiful things, as evidenced by science, they nurture our spirit. Likewise we need to express ourselves, to create things. This helps us resolve our own issues and resonates with those perceiving our art. Finally, in order to make the world a better place and continue to stimulate humanity's growth, it is essential we have people who question society, politics, and culture.

Some might rank these in various orders of importance but the reality is they are all important, all very much needed. Art is an essential thing. It is necessary for our psychological and spiritual health as individuals and as a species. Art is one of the things that separates us from animals. It is a human thing. So I say, go out and make something. Be as human as you can be - create!
