The State of Independence

No one is an island.
I've been thinking a lot about independence, specifically the ability to choose within a free framework, and the illusion of freedom.

It bothers me that anyone thinks they are free - that they are independent. No one really is. The idea that anyone can function in a vacuum, completely devoid of outside influences (total freedom, a nearly Buddhist state) is impossible in the material world.

You are not free.

There are levels, a spectrum of freedom, on which we can claim more choice or less. There are independent thinkers (I count myself one) who are able to observe a situation and choose based on their established principles and ideas as opposed to being swayed by popular opinion or carefully crafted marketing materials.

There are people who are independently wealthy (a flawed term, but for the purposed of discussion...) and able to control their environments by throwing money at problems, people, or things.

There are people who choose to isolate themselves from society, taking to the wilderness, foraging and homesteading as requirements dictate.

But in all these cases, pure independence, even in these situations, is impossible.

The independent thinker is dependent on their faculties of observation, their socialized influences, their friends, and the news for input to come to conclusions.

The independently rich person is entirely dependent on markets and systems that nurture wealth creation in order to maintain their status.

The hermit is dependent on the knowledge accumulated by society from generations in order to actively choose and succeed in his lifestyle of isolation.

The independent cannot function without outside assistance. They are, fundamentally, in relationship with the rest of the world. There is, no such thing, as independence (Happy Fourth!).

I can't help thinking about these things in relation to the work I do daily. While I am an independent author (i.e. not associated with a publisher) I do not function in a vacuum. I require many systems in place in order to do the work I do. In fact, without these systems, technological innovation, and the democratization of information, my work would be impossible. I would cease to be.

Unlike a large publishing house, I am a leaf on the wind. I can be blown this way or that by circumstances outside of my control. I can be crushed easily if systems are removed. I am still dependent.

More than anything, I am dependent on your support. You are my most crucial system, my most cherished dependency - my reader. To do what I do, I am dependent on everything you do - buying, reading, sharing, gifting, patronizing, encouraging, reviewing, and rating. And I am comfortable with this "vulnerability." So this weekend when my American readers are eating hamburgers, hot dogs, and shooting off fireworks, remember those people on whom you depend, and those who depend on you. We are all connected. We are all dependent. And that is a good thing.

As an indie author, I'm a bit like a local business and depend on the love and support of readers like you. Please check out my website where the "buy" links support me the most (and big business the least!).

You can also support me through becoming a patron! Even $1 helps (but the more you support, the more rewards you get!)!

My 2015 Vow

Everyone needs the obligatory "New Year's" post, so here is mine for 2015 - from a professional and personal perspective (my parenting one can be read here).

I'm not sure about this "resolution" business, but I can keep a few promises. I think promises hold more weight for me. Maybe you have been successful with resolutions. I feel like often they set us up for failure either because they are too vague, too unrealistic, or because they reflect someone else's ideals and expectations. I want to foster success throughout my life and to do that, I feel like re-packaging and acceptance are important. With these things in mind, this is my 2015 vow - my promises for the following year:
  1. I promise to only ever be myself and honor my preferences and artistry - despite applause, mockery, attacks, compliments, snide tones, as well as disparaging body language or facial expressions.
  2. I promise to continue my personal development in all aspects of myself - spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically, and socially.
  3. I promise to be grateful every day for the blessings in my life, no matter how big or small.
  4. I promise to lift up those around me, in an effort to be a force for positive movement in the world.
  5. I promise to ask for help when I need it.
  6. I promise to smile, laugh, sing, and dance every day.
  7. I promise to do everything I can to put out a few good books (3 with luck and perseverance).
I wish you all a wonderful 2015 full of blessings and personal growth. I feel like it's going to be a good year for our family and myself in particular. I can't wait to see what it holds! Happy 2015!

Do you have resolutions this year? Promises? What do you want for yourself this next year? Leave a comment below!

Playtime and Celebrations

Here I come to kick some butt!!
All work and no play makes Alexis a dull girl.

Fortunately this week is full of fun. This past Saturday I got a night out to a friend's costume party (super fun to dress up and reconnect with friends!). Sunday I sang Pharrell's "Happy" at church and then we had Trunk or Treat, which was followed by us carving a pumpkin and roasting the seeds.

And this coming weekend? I'm opening at the Cambridge Drive Concert Series which should be another good time.

With any luck, next Monday Christian and I will get some movie time, but that will depend on a few things being in place (babysitting and errands being completed for example).

Though I have a few aspects of my doctoral applications yet to complete (short answers and essays for example), I feel confident that I will have them completed soon, and that all aspects of the applications will be at the peak of excellence (as far as I can make them). That's all I can do. The reactions of the admissions committees are outside of my control. I'm comfortable with whatever happens because I know whatever happens, this coming year is going to be a good year for myself and my little family. I don't know what that means exactly, but I know we're heading to a really good place.

All the more reason to put on some make-up and pretend to be an off duty superhero...or Toby Keith (Christian's costume...complete with a red plastic cup...).

Writing New Year's Resolutions

I know this next year is going to be big (maybe not big in the way 2013 was, but definitely big!). As such, I thought I would share a few of my writing resolutions with y'all:
  1. I will finish 7 books this year.
  2. I will explore video and audio in relation to my writing this year.
  3. I will build my author platform using 2-3 social media outlets (and I'll forget the rest without worrying or feeling like I'm stinting myself!).
  4. I  will do 5 things daily in order to bring me closer to my objectives.
  5. I will feel accomplished for achieving everything I do, regardless of how close or far it is from my goals.
That's it.

I could go on and on about more specific goals etc, but I won't. This is just from the professional angle. I have other intentions as well, on a more personal note (which I'll save for Raising an Alien).

So, cheers and have a Happy New Year!

Holiday Help - A Request to My Readers

I've been reading a lot of Ben Sweetland lately. While some of the things he wrote had to be taken with a grain of salt (men being the primary breadwinners...pretty much universally or women only wanting a new wardrobe), the principles are useful.

As such I'm going to follow his advice.

Here's what I want. I want 10,000 readers. I will know I have 10,000 readers by how many book sales I make, but the goal is the readers.

Because I'm working towards getting 10,000 readers, I thought it would make sense to declare this to the world. In order to get 10,000 readers I'm asking my fans to talk about or gift my writing with 5 people. Whatever 5 people you think would like my books (fantasy, science-fiction, young adult, romance, adventure, werewolves, etc), share my info or give them a copy!

Remember, these books are very reasonably priced and readers can download a portion of each book FREE from Smashwords to see if they find it interesting (and they will...so make sure to send them that direction if you haven't gifted one my books!).

When I reach different milestones I will do something special for my readers - I'll start out small at 1,000 and then 5,000 readers will have something more fabulous. 10,000 readers will mean something really special (and if I reach 15k or 20k or 25k, well then I'll go progressively more awesome with each milestone!). I am taking suggestions for things readers would like/be interested in - be it something like an prints of cover art, free stories, merch, coupon codes for free books, or me doing a truth or dare (I'm serious about that last one).

Thanks for your help and your love! I'm counting on you!

Pre-Holiday Artist/Writer Mania

It's been a busy time what with having a broken power supply for my laptop, making Christmas gifts, reading up on success, and taking care of kiddo. I'm in the middle of a bunch of things that I'm planning on making available to my readers etc:
  1. I'm thinking about putting up some videos with pronunciation keys for my books to make it easier to negotiate the crazy Gaelic names (yes? Yay or nay?).
  2. I'm still working on my short story that I hope will be available by Christmas. Tip for Khloe fans: It will include the exact wording of the Lilith prophecy!
  3. I'm also writing some songs... in a variety of styles.
  4. And in case that wasn't enough, there's always Book 4...
  5. and there's also the other short stories/tidbits I'm going to put into a book for Khloe fans who want all the different side and back stories.
Needless to say, my days are INSANELY busy. I've been napping at least once with my kid and crashing at night. So yeah, blogging has been a little hard. I promise to continue updating everyone and I will try to get to these other media tidbits for you (I'm excited about them and I hope you will be too!).

Oh, and in case I don't get back here in time...for everyone who believes, have a fabulous holiday next week! :-)

Happy Birthday Khloe or Happy Halloween!

SPOILER ALERT: I'm going to try to keep the spoilers to a minimum, but if you haven't read LOVERS & RIVALS and you like surprises, don't read the rest of this post.

It seems like just yesterday that I began Khloe's story. Now I'm working on the fourth book in (and conclusion of) her series. Wild!

Since today is Khloe's birthday, I thought I'd let you in on some questions that I plan to answer in book 4 (FAMILY, FRIEND, OR FOE):

  1. How far off the reservation will Freyr go? Can Freyr be redeemed or will he just fade into crazytown?
  2. What happened to Bruce Nichols?
  3. Just who was masquerading as Lord Bran?
  4. What's going on in the black out zone in Mag Mell?
  5. Who is the reincarnation of Zeus?
  6. Who visited Khloe in the fall during her lunch hour? Was it a vision of Ammon or was it someone else?
  7. Just what do the unicorns and brownies know? What aren't they saying?
  8. What actually happened to Laran's parents? Were their deaths connected to the prophecy somehow or just anti-Seelie sentiment?
  9. How will Khloe and Laran unite the Otherworld? Can they convince humanity to change their ways or is humanity doomed?
I think that's probably enough to ponder. Any thoughts?  Leave a comment below!

KID FOREVER! Or at least that's how I feel.

This year I did my first turkey for Thanksgiving. We made everything from scratch. It made me feel like an adult as opposed to an overgrown kid.
There's something about going home that always puts me back into kid mode. It helps when there's a generation younger than me present, as with my in-laws. There I feel like an adult - well, sort of.
But I'm 30. I should feel like a grown-up. After all, I am married. I have a cat. I pay rent and bills and even cook my own food. Still, I don't completely feel like what I imagine adults are supposed to be.
It might be the parent thing.
Having your own kid catapults you to a whole new level of adulthood. Anyone without kids instinctively knows this, despite never crossing the threshold. Those with kids often look at us youngins partying it up and think, "Yeah. I used to do that. Now I wipe butts."
Okay, maybe other things come to mind but still - there is a marked change.
And some of us fancy-free-not-quite-adults want to cross that bridge. Some of us, crazy as it sounds, want to wipe butts and get spit-up all over our favorite sweaters. And some of us want to stay kids forever.
To the latter, I suggest reviewing Peter Pan, for reference.
